Third contest on December 3rd!

Binghamton ICPC History

Binghamton University has been competing in the ACM ICPC for the past five years. Over these years, Binghamton's performance has steadily improved. We have made it to regionals three times, and we finally made it to World Finals in 2006.  Binghamton competes in the Northeast North America (NENA) region. Our region (like several other regions in North America) holds preliminary competitions to determine which schools qualify to compete in the regional competition. Traditionally, Binghamton competes in the Western preliminary competition to qualify for the NENA regional competition.

Northeast North America Region

Massachusettes Institute of Technology and Harvard University consistently make it to regionals every year: MIT almost always places first, and Harvard usually places second or third. In the past four years, the only other schools to place third or better have been University of New Brunswick and Binghamton University.  Typically, only first and second place get invited to World Finals, so the competition at regionals is very intense.

Western Preliminary

Several of the schools that compete in the Western Preliminary have proven to be formidible competitors, most notably University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, and SUNY Fredonia. Although Binghamton has performed better than these schools at regionals in recent years, these schools often do better than Binghamton at the preliminary competition.  These schools have successfully blocked Binghamton from making it to regionals twice in five years, so the preliminary competiton is no cakewalk.

2005/2006

This was the year that we narrowly defeated Harvard and Brown and successively made it to World Finals for the first time ever. It became clear that raw skill and a little bit of practice can get you to World Finals, but it takes a lot of training and team strategy to get into the upper ranks. The only American school to solve more than two problems was MIT.

2004/2005

Our faculty advisor was out of town during the Fall 2004 semester, and to make matters worse, almost all of the competitors from the previous year were no longer eligible to compete. Andrew Paroski, the only competitor who was still eligible, and Alyssa Ogawa, the new student coach, quickly put together two teams at the last minute. Unforunately, we were a little too slow at preliminaries and didn't make it to regionals.
