Message from the contest committee chair

The first contest of Spring 2009 was quite a success. Although it was announced short notice, we may have had our largest turnout ever - forcing people into the back room. With 50+ competitors, it is looking to be a good start for the remaining competitions this semester.
In general, the problems were ordered in expected probability. However, some parsing issues made the first question more difficult than expected. 24 competitors solved the second question, which involved breaking up a giant whitespace-less string into smaller words following some basic rules. The first problem (temperature conversion) and the third problem (data alignment and packing) were the next most popular questions and separated the scores from people who just got question 2 correct.
The remaining three questions ultimately decided the results of the competition (the last question was only solved by Prof. Craver who was not rated). The fifth question rated poker hands which was a longer problem but not terribly complicated. Question 4 involved resorting the digits within a number and finding the largest possible prime. The answer key had some trouble with this and delayed the results of the submissions in the last 10 minutes of the competition - ultimately determining the ranking for the top three competitors.
Overall, it was a good competiton with a lot of code submitted and many correct solutions. Some server problems arose but the contest ran rather smoothly and there were few issues from the problem set. Questions seemed rather accessible but not too easy either. The next contest is in 5 weeks, we'll see how things change up between now and then.
