Message from the contest committee chair
So, this was the first contest of the year (and only) that I didn't write - and the last contest for our graduating president. This ended up being one of our harder contests - but hopefully good experience for our younger contest writers. No one successfully answered question 3 or 4 (and there was no solution provided either... we'll try to get around to fixing that one). The third problem was largely a logic solver - although almost strictly harder than the fifth problem and a little less clear - and required maintaining an equation and permuting the possible answers (pruning would be necessary for larger problems). The fourth problem was a polynominal math problem and too time consuming for our competitors to spend too much time on.
Problem 6 was the most popular with 7 correct submissions. It was relatively straight-forward. Solve for the number of factors, compare and count. Problem 1 followed with 5 correct submissions and required competitors to find an maximal in-order subset. While this problem is better solved with dynamic programming, brute force techniques were popular. Problem 2 had 4 correct submissions and was primarily a simulation question. It wasn't terribly difficult but had a large number of rules and conditions to follow. Finally, question 5, an prefix equation solver, garnered only 1 correct submission - negative and multi-digit input stopped various attempts by our competitors.
We had a lot of prizes to award this time, but a number of qualified competitors left before they were awarded! The top three prizes were awarded to Jason Loew, jkodovs1 and Jiri Stehlik respectively. With our runner-up prizes being given to tfiller, Leonid Domnister and dckx.
