Message from the contest committee chair
I want to thank everyone who participated in the first BU ACM programming contest. A total of 25 competitors participated in the contest – far more than we were expecting! All of you who participated helped make our first chapter event a real success. Overall, I think the contest went very well. The submission system was ready on time and did not crash during the contest. We had prizes for everyone who competed. The pizza arrived on time. And, many of the competitors stayed afterward for the chapter meeting. It was great to see such a high level or interest and enthusiasm about the contest and the BU ACM chapter.
This was the first contest I have ever administered, and as such there were bound to be a few things that went wrong. I think that this contest served as a learning experience both for myself and for the competitors. This event brought to my attention several things that needed to be improved or changed. First, I underestimated how long it would take competitors to write solutions to the problems. After the contest, I tried coding a solution to Problem #2 as fast as possible. It took me about an hour, which was much longer than I thought it would take me. In general, it is difficult to tell how long a problem will take to answer when you are the author of the problem. To address this issue, the contest committee will now have someone other than the author try to write a solution as fast as possible to gauge the difficulty of a problem. We have already written most of the problems, solutions, and testcases for the March contest, so we will have a lot of time to gauge problem complexity and thoroughly test our solutions. Second, the registration process was haphazard and took much longer than I anticipated. To address this problem, Dan and Natan wrote a script that automates the registration process. They also improved the look and feel of the scoreboard and made it easier to submit solutions.
I hope that everyone had fun and was not discouraged. Special thanks to Professor Patrick Madden and Professor David Garrison for furnishing the prize money and to Microsoft for furnishing food and beverage.
